Business Need
Fujitsu’s new generation of self-checkout systems — Genesis II and Mini-Express — were designed to serve as white-label solutions for retail clients across Europe. Each deployment needed to reflect the visual identity of the purchasing brand, while maintaining a unified interaction model that could be reused across devices, languages, and store formats.

Modular in components (adaptive layouts for bagging, scanning, and payment modules)

Optimised for usability across hardware variations and touch performance limitations

Research & Testing
Approach
Me and the project manager have defined 12 core checkout interactions. From scanning to payment, and tested them with operators in real store environments.
Measurements included:

Completion time per task

Click heatmaps and hand movement tracking

Brand perception and visual clarity
Findings

Brand-neutral UI lacked clarity without clear affordances
-
Low contrast and poor button hierarchy caused hesitation
-
Confusion between bagging area feedback and scan confirmation
-
Need for larger touch targets in high-traffic environments

Design Solutions
I started with wireframes and after i have designed a modular user interface that could be:

Branded with any retailer’s visual identity

(colours, fonts, logos)

Deployed across multiple formats (Genesis II with full cash handling, Mini-Express for cashless express checkout)

Maintained via shared components to streamline development and onboarding
-
Compliant with accessibility standards (W3C AA contrast, min. touch targets, consistent iconography)
